One week in San Jose, Costa Rica

Many people visit Costa Rica for its beaches and tropical beach life but what if you have to go there for work and stay local to San Jose the city in the middle of the country? Well there is still a lot to do and experience :)

Let me put it straight: It all depends whether you are visiting during the rainy season or the dry season. If it is the rainy season then oh boy I am sorry for you :( but if it is during the dry season then LIFE WILL GIVE BACK :)

What to do in town if you are more of an outdoorsy athletic person?

VISIT VOLCANO BARVA

Beautiful and easily accessible from San Jose. Easy day trip to all visiting San Jose for work and needing to get away quickly after work. The hike is moderate but if you want to hike all the trails be ready for a total of 8 to 10 miles of hiking. Trails are well kept and the views are good IF you don’t happen to get stuck in a cloud like we did and see only fog! Also the entrance is around 12-16$ per person (for foreigners) as of the date of me posting this. Be prepared to pay cash (US or Colones) as they most likely won’t take your cards. Also there are no bars or snacks or vending machines here (not that I needed them lol) but letting you know so that you prepare and pack well. There are restrooms! Parking and road access may be a challenge for 2WD vehicles (depends if it rained or not).

VISIT BRAULIO CARRILLO NATIONAL PARK

Beautiful and easily accessible from San Jose. Easy day trip to all visiting San Jose for work and needing to get away quickly after work. The hike is easy but if you want to hike all the trails be ready for a total of 8 to 10 miles of hiking. There is not trail that involves a creek crossing (difficult depends on how much water there is). Trails are well kept and the views are good! Lots of Pretty trees. The views are great too. Also the entrance is around 12-16$ per person (for foreigners) as of the date of me posting this. Be prepared to pay cash (US or Colones) as they most likely won’t take your cars. Also there are no bars or snacks or vending machines here (not that I needed them lol) but letting you know so that you prepare and pack well. There are restrooms! And there is drinking water right at the entrance. A natural spring so you are all safe and good. I’m alive lol! Parking is easy. The guards can be weird BUT once tipped they become super friendly.

CLIMB AT PURA ROCA (GYM ESCALADA)

Are you in for a little bit of a work out or you never tried climbing? This is your spot! Super friendly staff, new clean padding !, nicely set v0-v6 boulder problems, 2 auto belays and an option to lead climb. Also there is a warm up / workout area upstairs. Ask the staff for help or for training and they will be more than happy to help you! If you make friend with them they will even take you climbing outside and show you all their hidden secret spots :)
